Bangkok!!!

Hello all! We made it to Bangkok. Here's a view from our first plane ride (12 hours, no movies!) to Beijing.

We're staying at a little hostel in Dusit, an area in Bangkok. It's not so wild and crazy here which is really nice. We stayed in the dorm the first night since we got in around midnight, but now we've moved to a private room on the top floor, woo! We met a guy named Robert on the plane who just graduated from Stanford and is working a government/education job in Bhutan, and he's staying in Bangkok for three days with us before his flight leaves! It's been great because he also has a couple contacts in the Bangkok area, so we were able to have two travel friends yesterday, and we visited the Grand Palace all together (photos from that excursion next post).

Khao San whoa!! This road is full of guest houses and street markets and food carts and foreigners. After a 20 minute walk through the more authentic Thai market next to our hostel it was a fun stop at Khao San to practice haggling and ordering straight from the carts. Also, since I only have clothes made of black spandex (thanks Oregon climate) I was really in need of some lighter garments in brighter colors. Check. Here are some pictures from our first day in Bangkok.

A side street off of Khao San road, lined with flags for the king (who apparently visited the nearby temple just days earlier). Temple visits were free for Thai's yesterday, but not for farang (foreigners) as we learned.

First chicken green curry, on Khao San.

Fruit cart where Mike got a dragonfruit smoothie.

Crossing a river on our way to Khao San road.

The hostel common space.

Today we're off to the Tourist center to find out about transportation to Krabi, on the Southern peninsula. Then probably walking around and exploring Bangkok a bit more before we leave. And probably going to Khao San road for nightlife tonight. Planning to blog about our visit to the Grand Palace (really really beautiful) soon! Much love from Bangkok, Jenna and Mike
